The Mercyhurst North East Saints baseball team utilized their hot bats to defeat Kankakee today 14-5.
Freshman Alex Cardona made his season debut on the mound for the Saints and was very effective. Cardona pitched 5 2/3 innings scattering 4 hits and allowing 5 earned runs, two of which scored on a fly ball lost in the sun. Cardona's final line was 5 2/3, 4 hits, 5 runs all earned, and 5 strikeouts.
In the sixth inning, Cardona was relieved by fellow freshman Brendan Hofacre. For Hofacre, coming off of a relief appearance in which he struck out seven straight to secure the win on Tuesday, it was more of the same. The freshman was brilliant over 3 innings of relief, striking out four more and allowing zero hits.
The final out of the game was secured by sophomore Steven Adamson, making his season debut, who induced a ground ball to second base.
The true story of the game was the Saints offensive output, which was all started by leadoff man Brandon Scheidemantle. Scheidemantle set the tone when he took the first pitch of the game and deposited it into left field for a leadoff single. He would go on to add four more base hits including a double and a triple to go along with five RBIs.
The Saints look to keep their bats hot tomorrow as they conclude their spring trip with two games
3:00PM against Henry Ford and 6:00PM against the Scotland Campus.
The Saints record now stands at 5-0.
