Jake Marinelli has recently been hired as the newest Mercyhurst North East head baseball coach. Marinelli, who hails from Cleveland, OH was a 2015 graduate of Mercyhurst University and a 4 year standout player for the Lakers baseball team. During his time, he helped lead the Lakers to the programs first ever college World Series appearance in 2015. That year the Lakers ended their season ranked 4th in the country and finished with a 40-11 record during his senior year campaign.

Immediately following graduation, Marinelli made his coaching debut in the New York Collegiate Baseball League (NYCBL) for the Hornell Dodgers. In 2016, Marinelli joined the coaching staff at Mercyhurst University and helped guide the Lakers to a 43-14 record and another top 10 finish. During the 2017 season, the Lakers finished 38-8 as Marinelli helped coach them to their 3rd consecutive top 10 finish. Throughout Marinelli’s 2 year coaching stint with the Lakers, they had 3 players selected in the MLB draft.

“I am more than thrilled to get this opportunity at Mercyhurst North East,” says Marinelli. “This is a baseball program with such a strong reputation that has been built up over the years. I would like to thank Coach Spano at Mercyhurst for being such a positive role model for the last two seasons and teaching me so much. We have a young talented group that works extremely hard on the field and in the classroom. Coach Rob Julian is doing an outstanding job with the pitching staff and with help from Brian Dewey (Director of Athletics) they did an amazing job keeping the program on the right path. I feel extremely lucky to have the chance to be a part of this team and I can’t wait to see what the 2018 season has in store”.

Marinelli will take the program over from previous head coach Brandon Crum who this summer accepted the head coaching position at Allegheny College. Last season the Saints won the Region III Championship under Crum’s direction. The Marinelli era will begin with official play this February when the Saints travel south for spring break to play 14 games in 10 days.
