Quamir White's put back at the buzzer broke a 98-98 tie and gave Lakeland their first loss of the season as the Saints stunned the number 17 ranked team in the nation.
After two free throws with six seconds left tied the game, the Saints raced down the floor a missed a layup, the game appeared to be headed for overtime but White tipped the ball toward the hoop just before the buzzer sounded. The ball fell into the net and Mercyhurst was instantly surrounded by the fans, who were frantic the last few minutes.
In a game Mercyhurst led by three at the half, both teams where whistled for a lot of fouls. Mercyhurst got called for 25 and Lakeland 30. The difference was most of Lakelands fouls left MNE at the foul line. Mercyhurst attempted 49 free throws and made 41 of them. The Lakers attempted just 26, making 18.
Lakeland was hot from the floor all night, shooting 58 percent from the floor. Mercyhurst shot 47 percent but did win the battle of the boards by a 38-31 count.
Soutiri Sapnas scored 32 points to led the Saints. Sapnas made all 17 of his free throw attempts.
Damon Jones scored 20 points while White and Je'Land Head scored 12 and 11, respectively. Head also led both teams with eight assists.
Mercyhurst wont have much time to celebrate, as they are on the road Wednesday at Butler Community College.
