Mercyhurst North East built up a 30 point lead early in the second half but then had to hold off a Thunderwolves rally late as they earned a victory Saturday afternoon.
Mercyhurst was leading 51-29 at the half, and started the 2nd half with a good run and were seemingly in control. However, a few careless turnovers and some three pointers by NCCC slowly pulled Niagara into the game.
With 1:39 remaining, the game was tied at 87 before Damon Jones scored on a drive to break the tie. Jones and Soutiri Sapnas combined to make five more free throws in the final minute to seal the victory.
Sapnas led all scorers with 34 points on 9-of-16 shooting. Jones added 16 for the Saints while Ramon Sheffield and Je'Land Head scored 14 and 12, respectively.
NCCC shot just 36 percent from the floor, but were awarded 41 free throw attempts to keep them in the game.
Mercyhurst will have the week off before traveling to Jamestown on Saturday for their final conference game.
