(1/24/15) On Saturday, the men's basketball team traveled to Maryland to take on the #1 team in region XX, Howard Community College.
Coming into the game, both team were similar in stats, records, and play. It would take overtime to decide the outcome of these two closely matched teams. In first half action, neither team took a large lead as the spread remained within a couple points throughout the half, both ways. The Saints however saw an advantage in rebounds and field goal percent as they out rebounded HCC 22-19 and outshot HCC 40%-32%. Brandon Wilkins had 11 points at half to lead the game in scoring, enough to give the Saints the 36-31 advantage after the first 20 minutes.
As the second half got underway, the scoring picked up for both teams. Each team was identical from the field at 42% however, Howard took the advantage going 5-6 from the 3-point line, which proved to be enough to close the first half gap. With 13 minutes remaining in the game, Howard saw an 8 point lead. The Saints would not back down as they rallied back led by Johnell Free and Brandon Wilkins combined 22 second half points. Enough to even the game and send them to overtime.
It was the Johnell Free show in overtime as he scored 12 of the Saints 16 points, and individually outscored HCC 12-10. This was enough to give the Saints the 92-86 win.
Individual highlights from the game include Johnell Free with a game high 27 points, Brandon Wilkins recorded yet another double double with 21 points and 10 rebounds, while Justin Dobbs contributed 12 points and 8 assists .
The Saints are back in action on Tuesday, as they travel to Ohio to take on Notre Dame College.
