NORTH EAST, PA- A packed Liguori field house on Tuesday night helped give the Saints men' basketball team a 81-75 win over Lakeland community college.
Johnell Free added 11 points and 5 rebounds.
The Saints started strong holding Lakeland to 6 points in the opening 10 minutes. Shamar Jeffery added 3 dunks to give the Saints momentum during this span.
At the break the Saints led 32-31.
To start the second half, Lakeland came out firing on all cylinders. The Lakers went on an 11-0 run in the first 4 minutes of the half.
The Saints stayed composed and went on a run of their own cutting the lead down to five with 8 minutes left to play.
Gerrell Williams gave the Saints their first lead of the second half by driving to the hoop for an and one layup. The Saints then led 73-71 with 1:50 to play.
Chris Scott from Lakeland community college would not go quite, he answered with a bucket of his own cutting the lead to 75-73.
A Lakeland steal with 28 seconds left led to a 75-75 tie.
With 21 seconds remaining, Omar Little Jr. drove the left side of the hoop laying the ball in over 6'8 Chris Scott giving the Saints a 77-75 lead.
Two bench technical' s led to four free throws where the Saints Omar Little Jr. was able to convert 3 of 4 to put the game out of reach.
"We really valued the ball tonight, having only 7 turnovers was the key to the game" says head coach David Gahan. With the win, the Saints move to 3-2 on the season.
The Saints are back in action on Saturday when they travel to Rochester, New York to take on the Jamestown Jayhawks in the Monroe Community College Tournament.
