Saints Win in Overtime

(Olean, NY) The Mercyhurst North East Saints started off the new year right where they left off in 2015 winning their 7th consecutive game in a thrilling overtime win 83-77 against the Jaguars of Jamestown Community College—Cattaruagus County (7-6).

A 7-2 run to start the game sparked by seven straight points by Gerrell Williams helped give the Saints an early lead in the opening minutes. Williams led all scorers with 25 points, 10 rebounds, and 5 assists.

Never trailing in the first half and after back-to-back threes by LeRon Epps to finish the half, the saints held an 11 point lead holding Jamestown to 27 first half points.

Both teams came out strong to start the second half as Jamestown continued to chip away at the lead. With 4:13 left in the game Jamestown was down 6 before John Behri of Jamestown hit a triple to cut the lead to 3 which gave Jamestown life.

A Saints turnover in the final minute lead to a fastbreak layup which resulted in a good bucket and freethrow to tie the game up at 71-71.

With 18 seconds left in the game Xavier Sewell drove the lane and put up a floater that fell short and into the hands of the Jaguars. The Jaguars called a timeout to draw up a final play.

Deonn Moore-Colomb drove the right lane with 5 seconds left taking a step back jumper that was just short sending the game into overtime.

Sewell got overtime started with a defensive rebound and a coast-to-coast layup giving the Saints an early lead in OT. Sewell finished the game with 13 points and 10 rebounds.

A steal and dunk by Williams helped close the game out as the Saints earned their first region 3 victory of the year moving to (11-4) overall and (1-0) in the conference.

The Saints are back in action on Saturday afternoon as they host Potomac State for a 4:00 p.m. tip-off.
