North East, PA- The Mercyhurst North East Men's Basketball (12-4) team defeated nationally ranked #18 Potomac State (10-2) 84-62 Saturday afternoon extending their winning streak to 8 games.
After a slow start to the game, the Saints found themselves down 11-0 in the early minutes. A steal and dunk by Gerrell Williams helped give the Saints life and energy in the packed Ligouri Field house. The Saints slowly chipped away at the lead getting as close as 6 points before the Catamounts of Potomac State took an 8-point lead into halftime.
Coming out of halftime the Saints came out firing on all cylinders as they went on a 9-2 run behind 4 of LeRon Epps 12 points to take their first lead of the game 41-40.
The Saints did not look back as they continued to build on the lead taking a commanding 70-51 lead with 5 minutes and change left to play in the 2nd half. The Saints used stifling defense and winning the rebounding battle to outscore Potomac state 54-24 in the 2nd half for a final score of 84-62.
The Saints are back in action when they travel to Niagara County Community College for a Region 3 matchup. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 P.M.
