North East, PA- The battle of winning steaks were on the line when the Mercyhurst North East Saints looked to extend their winning streak to 10 games while hosting Jamestown Community College who is also looking to extend their winning streak to 11 games.
Early struggles from the Saints gave Jamestown an early 6-0 lead before Justin Vaughan responded with a 3 pointer giving the Saints their first bucket of the game. After a back-and-forth first half, tied 26-26, the Saints used an 11-5 run to take a 37-31.
With 4 seconds remaining in the half Jamestown's Samuel Joseph hit a three going into intermission 37-34.
Another 6-0 run by the Jayhawks to start the second half gave them a 40-37 lead before the Saints responded with a run of their own, rattling off eleven-straight points to take a 48-40 which lead to a Jamestown timeout.
With 12:42 remaining in the 2nd half momentum started to sway the Saints way when a missed Gerrell Williams three point attempt turned into a rim rattling tip slam from Shamar Jeffrey bringing the crowd to its feet a Liguori Fieldhouse. Jeffrey finished with 19 points and 7 rebounds.
Controlling the game from that point on, the Saints continued to build on the lead taking a 96-83 win over the Jayhawks of Jamestown Community College.
The Saints improved to 14-4 overall and (3-0) in conference play while Jamestown fell to 15-3 and (2-1) in conference play.
Johnell Free led all scorers with 31 points and 12 rebounds. Justin Vaughan chipped in 20 points.
Jamestown was led by Rakim Lesane with scored 25 points respectively.
The Saints are back in action Saturday, January 23rd when they look to make school history extending their winning to 11-games against non-conference opponent Villa Maria College. Tip is scheduled for 3 PM.
