Saints Set New Program Best 11 Game Winning Streak

North East, PA- Looking to set a new program best with the longest winning streak in program history, the Mercyhurst North East Men's Basketball team hosted Villa Maria College out of Buffalo, NY for a non-conference matchup.

With history on the line the Saints started off hot going 2-3 beyond the arc to take an early 8-0 lead. Villa Marias' Dejuan Owens had the answer as he hit back-to-back-to-back three pointers for the Vikings to make it 13-11 Saints.

Villa Maria took its first lead of the game 21-20 with a steal and dunk by Dejuan Owens. The Saints responded with a dunk of their own as big man Shamar Jeffrey caught the ball baseline and went up for a two handed dunk giving the Saints a 22-21 lead.

The lead continued to flip back and forth before the Saints used a 15-7 run to close out the half and take a 43-35 lead into the break.

As the 2nd half got under way, Shequon Lindesey scored 4 quicks points during a 6-0 run to increasing the lead to 14 points.

Villa Maria once again had an answer as they fired off 10 straight points to make it 49-45 which lead to a Mercyhurst North East timeout.

Out of the timeout the Saints went on a 13-4 run extending their lead to 13. 

The Saints hung-on to win a hard fought battle 87-79 and set a new program mark with its first 11 game winning streak in men's basketball history.

Mercyhurst improved to 15-4 on the season while Villa Maria College fell to 7-19.

Gerrell Williams led the Saints with 20 points and 10 rebounds. Omar little scored 16 points going 8-8 from the freethrow line. Big man Shequon Lindesey added 12 points and 6 rebounds. 

Johnell Free chipped in 14 points. Justin Vaughan added 9 assists making this his new career high.

Dejuan Owens led Villa Maria with 26 points respectively.

The Saints are back in action when they travel to Geneesee Community College Tuesday, January 26th for a 7:30 tip.
