Batavia, NY- The Mercyhurst North East men's basketball team (15-5) fell short to Genesee Community College (15-6) 86-78 Tuesday night ending their 11 game winning streak.
Both the Saints and Cougars struggled early on trading missed shot after shot but it was Genesee who took the first lead of the game making an 11-4 behind 5 points from Terrance Brown.
The Saints kept things close and took their first lead of the game when Johnell Free connected on one of his five threes in the game giving the Saints a 20-18 lead.
After a back and forth first half, the Saints held a 36-34 advantage going into halftime.
Genesee responded going on a 22-6 run behind 9 points from Alex Morris who finished with a game high 32 points.
The Saints would not go away quietly. With 5:47 left on the clock, down 13 points, Justin Vaughan hit back to back threes with an Omar Little Jr. layup cut the deficit to 5 points.
This was as close as the Saints would get as they fell on the road.
With the win, Genesee improved to (2-3) in WYNAC Region 3 play as Mercyhurst suffered their first league loss (3-1).
Mercyhurst was led by Justin Vaughan who contributed 22 points.
The Saints are back in action Thursday, January 28th when they host Erie Community College for a region 3 showdown. Tip is scheduled for 7:30.
