North East, Pa- On sophomore night, the Mercyhurst North East men's basketball team needed everything they had from the upperclassmen, as the Saints won an overtime thriller 97-93 against Jamestown Community College-Cattaragus Campus.
With the win the Saints snapped a 7 game losing streak and Head Coach David Gahan eclipsed the 100 win mark.
An 8-2 run to start the game behind two triples from Johnell Free got the Saints off to a good start.
Mercyhurst would maintain the lead until the 8:23 mark in the first half, when JCC took their first lead of the game 24-23.
The Saints would close out the half on a 6-2 run holding a 43-39 advantage heading into intermission.
Out of the break the Saints increased their lead to 8 points, then JCC would respond with a 19-2 run and take an 8 point lead of their own with 6 minutes and change remaining.
The Saints rallied and cut the lead to 5 points but JCC increased their lead to 8 with 3 minutes remaining in the 2nd half.
The Saints used a 12-4 to close out the 2nd half and send the game into overtime.
In overtime, Justin Vaughan started things off for the Saints by knocking down a triple from the corner to give the Saints an early lead.
A back and forth overtime that saw three lead changes which ultimately ended in favor of the Saints winning 97-93.
Johnell Free closed out his career at Ligorui Fieldhouse with 29 points, 9 rebounds, and 7 assists.
The Saints currently sit at 16-11 overall and (4-7) in conference play.
The Saints are back in action Saturday when they travel down I-86 to face Jamestown Community College, where they have beaten them twice already this season. Tip is scheduled for 3 p.m.
