FLCC Classic, Tournament Review

The Mercyhurst North East Saints soccer players left Saturday morning of the holiday weekend to the Finger Lakes region of New York to play in the annual FLCC Classic tournament.

With moral high following the opening 1-0 OT win against Genesee Community College, the Saints were optimistic heading to the tournament as reigning champions. Unfortunately things did not go exactly to plan, and 3 games in 4 days took its toll on the Saints and a number of individual errors cost the saints dearly.

Mohawk Valley CC vs MNE Saints

The Saints started the stronger of the two sides in the muggy heat, forcing a penalty kick through Marcus Connors (Girard) duly dispatched by Michael Lennox for his first goal of the season. The Saints looked in control of the game until an own goal beat Craig Martin (Coltness) to send the teams in level at half time.

Two more goals for Mohawk in the second half was enough to secure the win for the Hawks, despite a Shane MacDonald (Harbor Creek) headed goal from a Michael Lennox (St Matthews Academy) cross in the final 10 minutes of the game.

FT Mohawk Valley CC 3-2 Saints

Saints: Martin, Diuedonne, Garnica, Angelo, MacDonald, Kennedy, Lennox, Desnerck, Hoffman, Connors, Shousher, Connors.

Finger Lakes CC vs MNE Saints

The Saints entered the 3rd game in 4 days looking for a positive response and performance to match. Unfortunately a slow start and defensive error lead to the Saints conceding an early goal, going down 1-0 in the opening 2 minutes.

Despite pressure from the Saints and midfielder Michael Lennox showing a range of passing in the midfield, it was Finger Lakes who extended their lead after uncertainty in the Saints back line.

The Saints did register a goal just before the halftime, with Dean Shousher opening his account for the season with right footed strike from a Zack Meadows (Dunkirk) through ball.

The 2nd half saw Finger Lakes add 2 more to their tally, as the saints pushed men forward looking to get back on level terms. Despite a strong work ethic and some tireless performances from the saints, a host of mistakes in key areas ensured an impossible task to register a win over the weekend.

FT FLCC 4-1 MNE Saints

Saints: Martin, Diuedonne, Carr, Angelo, MacDonald, Kennedy, Lennox, Desnerck, Hoffman, Shousher, Connors

The Saints resume play on Wednesday September 3rd in their home opener against Niagara Community College at 3pm.
