The Saints headed into the weekend determined to get two results after their First home game against Genesee CC didn't go as planned. With their first game of the Finger Lakes Community College Classic coming against Mohawk Valley Community College, the Saints had their sights on their first victory of the season. From the first whistle the Mercyhurst men came out flying. Unlike their first game, the Saints were all over the field communicating and pressuring as a team. It only took 4 minutes for them to get on the board through a great solo effort from #10, Devin Mason. Mason picked the ball up at the top of the box and beat his defender one on one before smashing a strike over the keepers shoulder, near post. This would be the deciding, game winning, goal as the Saints would go on to win 1-0 to notch their first victory of the season. With the addition of Freshman Riley Michels at the Centerback position and a few tactical adjustments, the team was able to stay strong and fight the rest of the 90 minutes to keep the ball out of the back of their net. Goalkeeper, Abass Al-Musawi recorded his first shutout of the season and his Mercyhurst North East career after providing 2 saves on the day.
Their next game, the following day, the Saint's would be up against the host team, the Finger Lakes CC Lakers. Coming off of a hard fought 1-0 win the day before, the Saints would jump out to a fairly early two goal lead with Goals for Jason Aguirre and Barrington smith coming in the 13th and 15th minute respectively. A 3rd goal would be added in the 32ndminute from a great individual effort by, Centerback, Nathan Angello. With a nutmeg at the edge of the box, Angello made quick work of the defender before clipping a shot back post over the head of the opposing goalkeeper. The first half would end 3-0 in favor of the saints.
Going into the 2ndhalf, the Saints kept the pressure on both through possession and by playing strong and disciplined defense. A 4th goal for the Saints would come in the 58thminute when Anthony Martone would slip in behind the Hawks Back Line and drive into the box on a break away. The Hawks keeper would make a great first save to keep Martone's shot out but Trevor Fowler did a great job in following up the play to put in the rebound bringing the score to 4-0 in favor of the Saints. The hawks would get one back with less than 10 minutes left in the game to bring the final score to 4-1, but it wouldn't be enough to keep the game from ending in Mercyhurst Northeast's favor to bring their record to 2-1.
The Saints are back in action again this Wednesday as they travel to take on Niagara Community College at 5:00 pm following the Lady Saints game at 3:00 pm.
