The Mercyhurst North East Men's soccer team traveled to Mercyhurst University, Erie campus today, to take on the Men's JV team. Always a good game against their cross town affiliated school, the Saints were looking to prove their worth in the eyes of the Erie campus coaching staff. From the start of the match, the Saint's showed the same level of organization and aggression in defending as their previous battle against Monroe CC. With a few chances on the breakaway early on, it was apparent that they would have opportunities to get on the board.
Shortly before half time, the Saints would get on the board after some good play by Freshman #8, Barrington Smith and #3 Jai Strayhorn led to a skirmish along the goal line. Sophomore #5, Jason Aguirre would clean up the loose ball and somehow get it into the back of the net to go into half time up 1-0. Both teams had plenty of chances and good spells of possession within the first 45 minutes. The second half would start off in the Saints favor as well as Freshman #3, Jai Strayhorn would be involved again having his shot blocked only to have sophomore #21, Trevor Fowler follow up and put the rebound in to make it 2-0 in favor of North East. Solid goalkeeping from Freshman #1, Abbas Al-Musawi would keep a few breakaways out of the net but the eventual pressure from the Mercyhurst Erie campus JV team would end up with finding the back of the Saints net 2 times to end the game tied at 2-2.
The Mercyhurst North East Saints will travel to Lorain Community College for their next game on Thursday October 1st. They will hopefully have a rematch against the Mercyhurst Erie Campus JV team within the next couple of weeks. More details will follow.
