On Sunday, August 28th, 2016 the Mercyhurst North East Men's Soccer team were back in action with their first home game of the season. The Saints hosted Mohawk Valley Community College.
Last year's Match against the Hawks ended with a 1-0 win for the North East Saints so this game was definitely going to be a test. From the first whistle, both teams saw a good bit of possession and the play was fairly back and forth with the Hawks looking to be more dangerous in and around goal. In the 15th minute, Mohawk Valley would get on the board first with a goal from #11, Michael Wray, unassisted. The Saints didn't slow down as chances were created by #7, Daniel Noble and #10, Alex Simos but kept out by the Hawks Goalkeeper. Ten minutes before the first half ended, the Hawks would put another one away on the Saints, with #11 Michael Wray scoring his second of the Match.
At half time, the score was 2-0 in Mohawk Valleys favor. Around the 55th minute of the Second half, the Hawks would strike again with their 3rd goal off of a corner kick that made it thru the traffic in the box and eventually finding the back of the net. Although the score was 3-0, the Saints didn't throw in the towel as the last 30 minutes of the game saw North East create good chances and good spells of possession and build up play. With about 20 minutes left in the game, a ball over the top from #7, Daniel Noble, found #2, Jaheed Loblack who would beat two Hawks defenders on the end line to squeeze the ball past the Hawks Goalkeeper at the near post. The game would end with a score of 3-1 with the Saints having a few other chances in the dying moments of the game, but with no final product. Freshman Goalkeeper, #00 Jason Marczak would end the game with 9 saves and both teams would end regulation with 5 shots on goal, with the Hawks making the most of their chances to defeat the Saints.
Mercyhurst North East will travel to Erie Community College for another away game this coming Wednesday, August 31st.
