After two road trips, the Mercyhurst North East Men's Saints were back home this past Wednesday, September 14th to take on the Jamestown CC Jayhawks. The game would end up being a defensive battle for the full 90 minutes as the score line would end 0-0 at the end of regulation. The Saints put together their best defensive performance of the season as they faced 21 shots from the Jayhawks and gave up no goals. Freshman Goalkeeper #00, recorded his first shutout of the season while making 15 saves along the way. Stand out performances came from a few unlikely heroes with the likes of #20, Gavin Flores (who is also a member of the Men's Lacrosse team), getting his first start of the season as well as #3 Wilson Velasquez and #13 Anthony Martone who were asked to play out of their normal positions.
In the first half the saints created a few opportunities with #10, Alex Simos getting a few shots on target as well as good combination play in and around the box from #6 Tom Sedgewick, #2 Jaheed Loblack, and #13 Anthony Martone, down the right flank. The Saints back line also had their work cut out for them in the first half as a few direct kicks and corner kicks from the Jayhawks were served deep into MNE's box, but the Defense stood strong and dealt with the danger. The second half fell in line with the first 45 minutes with both teams getting good scoring opportunities. Saints Goalkeeper, Marczak came up huge on a point blank save from a Jayhawks header off a corner kick to keep it scoreless. #12, Brandon Bessetti, was also able to get on the end of a corner kick from the saints but unfortunately saw his header go high and wide of the target. #2, Jaheed Loblack, created a great chance for himself after receiving a slip pass into the box from #13, Anthony Martone. Loblack cut inside, just beyond the reach of his defender and attempted to place the ball back post but he also saw his effort miss high and wide.
At the end of the full regulation, both teams had battled hard and let a great effort on the field. With no goals to show fo their efforts, however, the game ended scoreless leaving the Saints still looking for their first win of the 2016 season. The Saints are back in action again as they travel to Mercyhurst University, Erie Campus, to take on the Mercyhurst university JV at 4:00 pm on Monday, September 19th, 2016.
