The Men's Soccer Team got off to a 2-0 start to there season after a weekend trip to the Finger Lakes where they took on Tompkins Cortland Community College and Corning Community College in the span of two days.
The First Match against Tompkins Cortland, on Friday, August 25th, would not only be a first victory for the Men's Saints, but it would also be a first shut out for Sophomore Goalkeeper, Jason Marczak. Freshman, Abdala Salah, would score his first two goals and assist on the teams third goal to Freshman striker, Radzhan Lomidze, to give Mercyhurst North East the 3-0 victory.
The second match against Corning Community College, on Saturday August 26th, would prove to be a tougher challenge for the Saints as the game would remain scoreless until the Saints would go up 1-0 with a goal from Freshman Striker, #7, Kaleb O'Neill. After a great defensive effort from #11, Radzhan Lomidze, O'neill was able to grab onto a bobbled ball from the Corning Goalkeeper and tuck it into the net to give the Saints the 1-0 lead. Shortly after the first goal, a skirmish in the box found the ball at #17, Matt Jacksons feet. After some quick combination play between Jackson and #10, Abdala Salah, the ball was played into #22, Jared Spring who placed the ball past the keeper to go up 2-0.
Corning was able to get a goal back on a penalty kick and was almost able to equalize in the last 10 seconds of the match, but the Saints were able to hold off and get the victory with the final score of 2-1. The Saints next game will be this Thursday, August 31st when they host Erie Community College at 5 pm.
