The Mercyhurst North East Saints men's soccer team competed in the Lakeland CC tournament this past weekend playing two matches against Lorain CC and Lakeland CC. Game number one would see the Saints go up against Lorain CC. The saints would get an opportunity early on in match number one with a hand ball called in the box in their favor. #20, Nick Grimaldi, would step up to take the spot kick, only to see his shot saved by Lorains' goalkeeper to keep the score level at 0-0. A few quick counter attacks at near the end of the first half would be converted by Lorain to put them up at 2-0 going into the half.
The second half would be all Saint's as they kept the pressure up in their attacking half. After a few missed chances, Freshmand, #11 Tilor Fuller, would finally get the Saint's on the board with his first goal of the season, and career. The Saints continued to take it to Lorain, but couldn't find the equalizer as the game ended 2-1 in favor of Lorain CC.
Sunday's game would be played in the pouring rain, as the Saints were hosted by Lakeland CC. the Saints would get off to a shaky start when Lakeland was able to put one past Freshman keeper, #0 Hector Corrales. The first half saw many chances for the Saints, after letting in the first goal, but the halftime score remained at 1-0, in favor of Lakeland. The 2nd half, however, would belong to the Saints as they would outscore Lakeland 2-1 to have the final end in a draw, 2-2. Freshman #21, Trent May, and #6, Jonathan Mombolo, would both get their 2nd goals of their careers and season for the Saints. May's goal coming off of a 30 yd, unassisted, strike whereas, the game tying goal for Mombolo would come off a corner kick, assisted by freshman #5, Gavin Angelotti.
The Saints look to get their first win tomorrow, Tuesday September 11th, as they host Jamestown CC. Kick off is at 3 pm.
