Mercyhurst North East had four softball players recognized as first team All East Region for the National Fast Pitch Coaches Association (NFCA), which was released today. The East Region is comprised of 14 states in the North East part of the country. Those states range from Michigan to New Jersey, down to Maryland. There are only Regions in the country, East, South, and West.
The four selections for the Saints are the tied for the most in MNE history. The Saints had four selections in 2014 as well. The NFCA picks are made by the coaches in the Region.
Kiersten Coho (East Freedom, PA) made the team as a pitcher. The sophomore right hander led the Saints with 20 wins and 182 strikeouts in 170 innings. Her control was most impressive this season, issuing just 21 walks. She also batted .411 for the Saints, with eight home runs and 10 doubles. Five of her eight home runs came in the post season.
Emily Foy (Frewsburg, NY) was also recognized as a first team selection. The sophomore catcher led the Saints with 11 home runs, 14 doubles, three triples, and 51 RBIs. Foy was consistent all year, finishing with a .430 batting average and was the Saints most clutch hitter. She had 12 RBIs alone in the district tournament.
Sam Mott (Frewsburg, NY) was named All East Region for the second time, as she was also picked in 2014. Mott played 3rd, DP, and pitched for the Saints this season. Mott hit .367 with 10 doubles and 3 home runs for MNE. While pitching, Mott had a team best 2.28 ERA and 118 strikeouts in 95 innings. Mott finished the year with 12 wins vs only three losses.
Mackenzie Hawley (Cochranton, PA) also made 1st team. The Saints shortstop and leadoff batter led the team with a .432 batting average and scored 65 runs. She also broke the school record for steals in a season with 20. Hawley also added 13 doubles and four home runs to have a great freshman season.
Mercyhurst finished with a record of 37-18 overall and won the Western New York Athletic Conference, the Region 15/3 Championship, and District K to advance to the National Tournament for the eighth straight year.
All four players are now eligible to be NFCA All Americans, which will be announced June 10th.
