With their backs against the wall the Saints came out swinging Thursday afternoon against the number six seed.
With Portia McBride keeping Illinois Central scoreless, the Saints were looking for a way to score as the game was 0-0 into the fourth inning. In fact, the Saints were hitless at that point.
Julia Lang then sent a pitch deep over the right center fence to put MNE up 1-0. In the sixth, Christina Rice singled with one out and Emily Foy laid down a sac bunt. The ball was mishandled and Rice raced all the way to third. That brought up Lang, who connected on the first pitch for a three run homer to left center to put MNE up 4-0.
McBride took care of the rest, allowing just four hits and striking out eight to get the shutout win.
"We needed someone to step up today", said head coach Brian Dewey. "Julia and Portia provided us with the boost we needed to keep our season alive. Portia was really spinning the ball well and Julia made a slight adjustment in batting practice and it paid off bigtime."
With the win, the Saints advance to the final 12 in the tournament and will face an unknown opponent later today.
