The Mercyhurst North East Saints softball season came to an end late Thursday night following a loss to number 5 seed East Central Community College.
East Central scored three unearned runs in the first inning and the ECCC pitcher was tough on the Saints hitters all day.
The game ended the Saints Cinderella season in which they blew all expectations out of the water. They were unranked, had suffered several player losses, and had to battle a tough new District that included National Power Delaware Tech.
The Saints finished 29-13, won the Region 3/15 title, and the District K championship to qualify for Nationals for the seventh straight season.
Out of 140 Division 2 softball programs, only eight ended up staying alive later than the Saints.
"What a memorable season these past few months have been", said head coach Brian Dewey. "I really think most teams would have just folded up shop and had fun. But this group made a decision that they would keep the pride and tradition going. They believed in themselves and made this one of the best seasons we have had, despite all that was going against them. I am so proud to have worked with them, and I will never forget the 2015 Saints."
