This week we had a chance to find out a little bit more about the Mercyhurst North East Assistant Softball Coach Ron Bretz. We will learn about his experiences coaching at MNE and also his passions off the field as well as some other fun facts about Coach Bretz.
When did you start coaching? When did you start coaching at MNE?
"I started coaching in the mid 1980's coaching Babe Ruth baseball. I started at MNE in December 2008".
What is your best MNE Softball memory?
"There have been so many memories - I can't single out just one".
The softball team has been to the NJCAA World Series for seven consecutive years now, what do you dedicate that continued level of success to?
"The continued level of success of the team has been a result of Coach Dewey's dedication to teaching the fundamentals and working until the team becomes one unit"
What is your favorite aspect of coaching at MNE?
"My favorite aspect of coaching is seeing the athlete improve and then go on to excel both on and off the field"
What is the most important lesson you have learned from coaching at MNE? What is the most important lesson you have taught coaching at MNE?
"The most important lesson I have learned is it is great to win but that's not the number one thing. The most important lesson I've taught is to never give up; do the best you can and results will come"
What is your personal best achievement/experience coaching softball at MNE?
"My best achievement is improving the pitching staff and my best experience is winning multiple regional and district titles and going to the World Series seven years in a row"
What sports did you play growing up?
"Growing up, I played baseball, tennis, football, volleyball, golf and basketball"
Besides softball, what is your favorite sport to watch? Play?
"My favorite sport to watch (besides women's softball!) is football. My favorite to play is golf"
What are your favorite professional sport teams?
"My favorite professional sport team is the Buffalo Bills"
Who is your all-time favorite athlete?
"My favorite athlete is Joe Namath"
If you could be any athlete for a day, who would you be and why?
"If I could be any athlete for a day I would be Joe Namath because he was so cool"
What is your all-time favorite music band?
"My favorite band is The Beatles"
What is your all-time favorite food?
"My favorite food is chicken wings (extra crispy)"
What is your all-time favorite movie?
"I love any movie with Steven Seagal"
If you could go to lunch with any person, living or dead, real or fiction, who would it be and why?
"If I could go to lunch with anyone it would be Jesus. Why? Because He is Jesus!"
If you were a professional wrestler, what would be your entrance song?
"My entrance song would be the one Elvis used - the theme from 2001: A Space Odyssey"
Who is your Hero? Or who do you admire most? Why?
"I don't have one single hero. I admire older people because you can learn so much from them"
If you could have any job in the world, what would it be?
"If I could have any job in the world, I'd be a pro golfer"
If you were in a beauty pageant and they asked you "if you had one wish, what would it be for," what is your response?
"First of all, I'd never be in any beauty pageant, but if I had one wish it would be for good health for everyone"
Just because I put it in the preview for your WINS article, what is your best golf score?
"My best score is a 31 (on 9 holes)"
