Softball Struggles Continue On Florida Trip

The Saints took a step backwards as fell 8-6 to Jackson as they continue their road trip in Clermont, Florida.

The Saints committed four errors in the first two innings Wednesday night as they gave Jackson two early runs.

In the top of the second, the Saints had the bases loaded but the base runner on third was picked off to end the inning. In the third, Grace Edwards walked and would later score on a single by Emily Foy.

After Jackson increased the lead to 3-1, Mercyhurst answered with a four run fifth to take the lead.

Mackenzie Hawley walked to start the inning, after a steal of second she advanced to third and the throw to get her sailed away, allowing Hawley to score. Kim Burdett walked and Sam Mott singled to keep the rally going before Kaelyn Shea belted a long double to score both runs. Shea would complete the scoring when a fly ball was dropped.

However, the wheels would come off for the Saints in the bottom of the fifth. Starter Lea Theisen, who had been in total control, walked the leadoff batter. A sac bunt was misplayed and a double allowed the game to get tied 5-5. With two outs and a runner on second, Edwards misplayed a fly ball to center, allowing Jackson to take the lead. Another walk and single gave Jackson a 8-5 lead.

Mercyhurst rallied in the last inning getting the trying runner to first with two outs but couldn't get another hit as they fell 8-6.

Kaelyn Shea and Emily Foy continued to stay hot with three and two hits, respectively.

Mercyhurst falls to 4-5 on the season and will need to turn things around as they play two more games on Thursday.
