The Saints survived a big scare from Monroe College in the first game of the region tournament Saturday morning.
The Mustangs scored five runs in the top of the second inning to put the Saints to the test. Starter Sam Mott struggled with her command, issuing five walks. Kiersten Coho replaced her with two outs in the second inning.
In the bottom of the second, Heather Mueller got the Saints back in the game with a grand slam homer to left.
Monroe extended that lead to 7-4 in the fourth when Cassidy Wootten laced a two run homer to left center.
In the bottom of the fourth, the Saints once again went to the long ball to gain control. Mackenzie Hawley walked to start the inning and Kaelyn Shea singled to center to bring the tying run to the plate. That batter was Emily Foy, who promptly hit a three run homer to tie the game. The Saints weren't done yet, when Kim Burdett then rocked a 1-0 pitch to deep center to put the Saints ahead 8-7.
In the sixth, Coho got in on the act, connecting on a solo homer to center. Grace Edwards then doubled and scored on a single by Taylor Wilson. Pinch Runner Katy Catalano would cap the scoring when she raced home on a wild pitch.
Coho earned the win, going 5.1 innings in relief, striking out seven and allowing just four hits.
