Saints Comeback Falls Short vs Kalamazoo

Mercyhurst North East fell behind early and then come up just short on a comeback bid against KVCC Thursday afternoon.

The Cougars took advantage of walks, errors, and wild pitches in the first two innings and jumped out to an 11-1 after three innings.

Lea Theisen then came into the game and shut the bats down, holding the Cougars scoreless with just two hits over the final four innings as the offense tried to mount a comeback.

The Saints scored in the third, and two more in the fourth and even had the bases loaded but a pop up ended the threat. In the fifth, the Saints once again loaded the bases but a careless base running mistake led to a pick off by the catcher to end the inning.

In the sixth, the Saints had a fury of hits and scored four runs and suddenly had the tying run at the plate with an 11-8 score. Heather Mueller sent a long fly ball to left but was caught at the base of the fence. Aren Schwab then hit a long fly ball to right center but the centerfield made a diving catch to end the inning and that was as close as the Saints would get.

The Saints out hit the Cougars, with Mackenzie Hawley leading the way with four hits while teammates Ashlyn Slusher and Hannah Larkin each had three. Slusher also had a home run and three RBIs.
