Mercyhurst used some late game magic to take home the Region Championship Sunday afternoon in Middletown.

The Saint came into the day needing one win in two tries over Rhode Island to advance while the Knights had their ace Courtney Sheridan in the circle.

Mackenzie Hawley walked to start the game and stole second. Kaelyn Shea bunted her over and Aren Schwab hit a sac fly to put the Saints ahead 1-0.

The Saints threatened but could not score again off Sheridan as they left 7 runners on over the next five at bats. In the fifth, Sheridan tied the game with a solo home run to left.

In the bottom of the sixth, Grace Edwards singled to start the inning. Megan Minihane put down a perfect bunt, which the Knights defense let roll but the ball stayed on the line to give the Saints two runners on. Hawley then bunted over both runners to set the stage.

Shea hit a ground ball to second to score Edwards with the go-ahead run. Aren Schwab then singled to make it 3-1. After Lei Guthrie walked to load the bases, Hannah Larkin hit a grand slam to clear the bases and make it 7-1.

Ashlyn Slusher was dominant in the circle, scattering five hits and striking out six for her complete game victory.

Edwards, making her first start since being injured on March 23, led the Saints with two hits. Joining her with two hits was Schwab and Guthrie.

With the win, the Saints win the Region Championship and will now advance to the District (super regional) next weekend at the winner of the Region Tournament. That will be hold in either Randolph, New Jersey or Scranton, PA.
