Saints Rally Falls Short

Kalamazoo Valley CC 6
Mercyhurst North East 5

Mercyhurst North East let one slip away Sunday afternoon in Florida against a good Kalamazoo team. The Saints had more hits and less error but a few costly base running mistakes allowed the Cougars to escape with a win.

The Saints had trouble keeping the ball out of the air the first four innings and slipped behind 6-0. Mercyhurst rallied with two runs in the fifth, but should have scored at least one more until a bad coaching decision at third cost the Saints a run.

After scoring another run in the sixth, the Saints then loaded the bases with one out in the seventh, trailing by two runs. However, a Saints baserunner was picked off third. Ripley Burkhart then singled home a run, which would have tied the game and the Saints saw the game end with the tying run on 2nd base.

Anna Swartout and Burkhart both had two hits for the Saints in a losing effort. Justine Dean took the loss in the circle. Tori Harding finished the game with 3 perfect innings to give the Saints a chance.

The Saints played sloppy and paid for it with a loss on Sunday afternoon to Glen Oaks. Four errors allowed Glen Oaks to score several unearned runs.

Tori Harding took the loss in the circle, but pitched well as she only allowed three earned runs.

Riplee Burkhart led the Saints offense with three hits and two doubles. Lea Munnell also had three hits and two RBIs. Justine Dean added two hits for the Saints.

Mercyhurst North East falls to 1-5 overall and will be off for two days before returning to action on March 7.
