Saints Fall To Orange in Extra Innings

The Saints drop the opening game of the three game regional series Saturday after having a hard time scoring runs against Orange.

Orange broken a scoreless tie in the fourth inning with an RBI groundout. The Saints were struggling to score but in the sixth, Riplee Burkhart singled, stole second and scored on a double by Alyssa Johnston that hit halfway up the fence.

Using the international tie breaker, the Saints failed to score in the top of the inning with a bad bunt attempt resulted in a double play. In the bottom of the inning, Orange got a bunt down and the throw to first was off the mark and down the line, allowing Orange to score an unearned run to end the game.

Lei Guthrie was the tough luck loser, going the distance and striking out 12. Johnston was the lone Saints to have multiple hits.

After dropping game one in extra innings, the Saints returned the favor in game two to split the day against regional opponent Orange.

Orange jumped on the scoreboard first with two unearned runs in the opening inning as the Saints committed several errors to start the game. After that, the Saints defense settled down and Justine Dean kept the Colts off the scoreboard.

In the fourth, Riplee Burkhart singled to start the inning and would later score on a single by Alyssa Johnston to cut the lead in half. In the sixth, Lea Munnell singled and would score on a hit by Justine Dean to tie the game at 2 each.

The game went to extra inning and the international tie breaker was used. Burkhart started the inning with a RBI double to right. Lei Guthrie then doubled home Burkhart to provide a two run lead. In the bottom of the eighth, Dean retired the side to preserve the win.

Dean went all eight innings, striking out five and scattering eight hits.

Burkhart led the Saints with three hits while Dean and Guthrie each added two.

The Saints and Colts will finish the three game series on Sunday with an 11am game.
