Mercyhurst North East softball coach Brian Dewey has recently announced a new addition to the coaching staff. Carey Smith will join the staff as the new graduate assistant. Smith will be entering her first year as an assistant coach, joining Ron Bretz, who will be in his 11th season with the Saints.
Smith, a Cleveland, OH native, recently graduated from Youngstown State University, where she was a catcher for the Penguins. Smith graduated with a degree in Criminal Justice and will be in the Applied Intel program at Mercyhurst.
In addition to being in charge of the Saints catching staff, Smith will oversee the Saints off season workout program and academic progress for the Saints. While at YSU, Smith was a two time Academic All American and also worked with the strength and conditioning staff in the YSU athletic department.
"We feel fortunate to add Carey to our staff", says Dewey "She brings with her a certain skillset that I think will compliment my weaknesses as a coach. Not only will she help elevate our catchers, but she will make a big impact on what our players can achieve academically and in fitness."
