On Veterans Day, the #14 Mercyhurst North East Saints wrestling team hosted #18 Niagara County Community College.
Remembering the importance of the day, the Saints deemed the event a "Red Out" in honor of all Veterans, in which spectators, teams and others wore the color red.
Before the matches started, 7 veterans were announced as honorary captains. Brian Smith, part of the Army 197th infantry and a life long wrestler; Mark Wilson, Army National Guard 28th infantry and a former wrestling coach; Chuck Osborne, Army 101st Airborne and a lifelong wrestling supporter; Gary Osborne, Air Force 554th Redhorse who served in Korea; Scott Bendon, Navy USS Lawrence and Bryant Vanoy, Army Reserves 542 Quartermatser company and current member of the MNE wrestling team. All 7 veterans, along with others in the stands were honored and a moment of silence was taken for those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom.
Once the event got underway, it proved to be a true battle of 2 top 20 teams in the NJCAA. 8 out of the 10 matches went the full 7 minutes and half of the matches were decided by less than 4 points. In the end the Niagara Thunderwolves came out with the team win, 25-14.
