Jamestown, NY- This past weekend the Saints wrestling team traveled to Jamestown Community College to compete in their 5th annual open tournament. The tournament featured some very competitive teams including some NCAA Division 2 and 3 collegiate athletes. Teams participating were Niagara Community College, Gannon University, Mercyhurst University, Penn State Fayette, Brockport, and many other unattached wrestlers.
Simpson received a first round bye to move to the semifinals where he won with a score of 2-0 over Mercyhurst Erie campus Zach Breeden. In the finals, Simpson wrestled another Erie opponent from Gannon University. Simpson edged Ilyaz Veysalov by a score of 2-1 to win the tournament.
Harnish also received a first round bye followed by two matches against wrestlers from Gannon University. The first match Harnish beat Freddie Nixon by a score of 7-5. In the semifinal match, he defeated Patrick Walker by a score of 6-2. In the final Harnish faced a common foe from Niagara Community College, Eugene Latson. Harnish won in 3:40 with a pin fall to win the tournament.
The Saints next competition will be Saturday February 10th, at Nassau Community College. This is their regional tournament, where the top wrestler from each weight class will move on to the national tournament February 23rd.
