Garden City, New York- The Saints took eight wrestlers to this weekend's Eastern District tournament. The Saints qualified four out of those eight wrestlers, and finished fourth as a team in the tournament. The Saints wrestlers who qualified for the national tournament were 157lber Derrick Ridgeway, 174lber Kennard Hairston, 184lber Deven Simpson, and 197lber Hunter Harnish. Ridgeway and Simpson are returning 2017 National qualifiers while Hairston and Harnish were the only two freshman to qualify for the national tournament.
At 157lbs. Ridgeway beat Jaelen Jean from Niagara Community College to receive a spot in the finals. In his Finals bout, he fell to Lucas Pincus of NASSAU Community College to finish second in the tournament.
At 174lbs. Hairston beat Thomas Grant from Sullivan Community College, and then fell to Jamestown's Cameron Page in the semifinals. In his final bout, Hairston beat Adam Mateo of Niagara Community College to finish third in the tournament.
At 184lbs. for the Saints Simpson Beat NASSAU Community Colleges Nickolas Provenzano and fell to Mike Fekishazy from Ulster in the semifinal. In the third place bout, Simpson lost a close one to J'havon Innocent from Sullivan Community College to finish fourth in the tournament.
At 197lbs. Harnish beat Eugene Latson from Niagara Community College in the semifinal match. In the finals Harnish fell to Zachary Knighton-Ward from NASSAU Community College to finish second in the tournament.
These four wrestlers will next compete in Council Bluffs, Iowa at the 2018 NJCAA National Tournament. Wrestling will be on Friday, February 23rd and Saturday, February 24th.
