On a sunny Saturday afternoon, the women's soccer team welcomed back over 20 alumni to play in the 6th Annual Alumni Game.
Alumni attending were Jess Sinnott '15, Katie Robinson 15', Harley Boyd 15', Steph Gambill 09', Nikki Whiteley 08', Kaillie Marshall 14', Alex Hanson 14', Leann Krysiak 12', Mallory Whiteley 11', Mona Badran 14', Savanna Paci 14', Brittany Edwards 15', Holly Lovich 12', Tiffany Nazarian 13', Olivia Sheer 14', Sarah Ritz 15', Grissel Reyes 11', Amy Tatalone 10', Staci Sult 11', Kaylyn Whitely 08', and former Assistant Coach Gary Whiteley.
The alumni matched up against the current Saints squad in what turned out to be a second half thriller, with the current MNE team coming out on top 5-3.
In first half action, the alumni seemed to feel comfortable getting back onto the pitch at MNE. They possessed the ball and move it around with confidence having a couple great scoring opportunities early on, but they couldn't find the back of the net.
In the 13th minute, Emily Griffith took a goal kick and flighted it over everyone to an on running Megan McKinney in the acting half, one quick 1v1 move gave her a breakaway in which she finished giving the Saints the early 1-0 lead over the alums.
The alums would answer 5 minutes later, when current DII Fairmont State starter and Saints alumni Harley Boyd would riffle a shot into the back of the net evening the score at 1-1.
In the 30th minute, Saints centerback, Lexi Whisel, would single handedly dribble through 6 alumni for a coast to coast goal, giving the lead back to the Saints 2-1.
Minutes before halftime, Holly Lovich would take a strike from outside the 18 putting the ball over the head of Saints goalkeeper Dahlaney Sargent tying the game at 2 apiece going into halftime.
As the second half got underway, the alumni were the first to attack as Alex Hanson would send a lofted ball into the box from the left side and Mallory Whitely would get a one touch finish to give the alumni the 3-2 lead.
Shortly later, the Saints would send a ball into the box in which alumni keeper Tiffany Nazarian would come out to gather, instead the ball took some bounces off of players and rolled to the feet of Megan McKinney for the equalizer.
McKinney would get back on the board 10 minutes later when she drove a shot into the back of the net giving her the hat trick and helping the Saints to a 4-3 lead.
With 12 minutes left in the game, McKinney was taken down inside the box awarding a penalty kick to the Saints. Dahlaney Sargent would take the shot and confidently drilled it into the right side of the goal, giving the Saints a 5-3 lead, which would hold for the final.
The Saints want to thank all alumni for coming back to make the 6th Annual Alumni game a special occasion for all. If you're an alumni and would like to play in the 7th annual alumni game next spring, please contact coach Hordych at email@example.com
