(North East, PA) The women's soccer team opened up their 2016 campaign hosting Mohawk Valley Community College on Sunday afternoon.
In first half action, the teams seemed to be pretty evenly matched. The best scoring opportunity in the first 20 minutes was when MVCC was awarded a Penalty Kick which blasted off the sidebar to keep the score even at 0-0. It was with twenty minutes left to play in the half when Sami Pace (Fort Lebouef) took the ball wide beating two defenders and serviced a ball to the back of the six to an on running Kristi Williams for the one touch finish giving the Saints a 1-0 lead. The lead would only hold for five minutes when MVCC got on the board beating Saints keeper Jordan Turzak (General McLane HS). The score would stay 1-1 going into the half.
As the second half got underway, the heat and lack of reserves seemed to play a role as the Saints looked fatigued. MVCC would knock in 3 goals in the first 30 minutes of the second half to widen the game to a 4-1 lead. In the final 5 minutes, Sami Pace would receive a pass at the top of the 18 box, beat the defender and drive a shot past the keeper to give the Saints a second goal, which would hold for the final of 4-2 in favor of the visitors.
"We learned a lot from this game", says head coach Jacob Hordych. "We have some things we really have to work out, but our team didn't throw in the towel, we kept working which was a positive to see."
Jordan Turzak recorded 14 saves for the Saints, who are back in action on Wednesday as they travel to ECC to take on the Kats at 4:00 p.m..
