NORTH EAST, PA- The Saints volleyball team hosted the Western New York Athletic Conference at the North East High School on Saturday October 26, 2019. The Saints had a great showing and were victorious with their first conference championship of the program.
In game one vs Monroe Community College (2 seed) Saints (3 seed) Saints win 2-1, (18-25, 25-19, 15-6) In the first set of the day the Saints started the day wobbly to lose the first set 18-25. In set two the Saint settled back into their offense as they were led by sophomore Alexis White with 7 kills along with teammate Destiny Goodnight with 7 kills. The Saints would force set three where they took charge and owned the match from MCC. Torilynne Nelson dished out 18 assists and Erin Froehlich collected 10 digs on the match.
In game two vs Niagara County Community College (6 seed) Saints (3 seed) Saints win 2-0 (25-17,25-16). The Saints took the lead early and never looked back. Providing the kills this match were freshmen outside hitter Destiny Goodnight with 10 kills, in addition Alexis White with 5 kills, Hope Hasbrouck with 10 digs, and setter Torilynne Nelson with 20 assists on the match.
In game three vs Genesee Community College (4 seed) Saints (3 seed) Saints win their first conference championship in a thriller 2-1 (13-25, 25-13, 15-13). The Saints started the set off weak on serve receive as the Cougars had a run of 7 aces. The Saints would fall in the first set but then return the favor in set two. Riley Sams, Haleima Yates, and Torilynne Nelson would provide serving runs for the Saints. Adding to the threat Destiny Goodnight had 4 kills alone in set two. The Saints would force a deciding set game three for the championship. The Saints would fall back and the Cougars would be the first team to 8 Saints 5. The Saints switched sides and turned the page as they would battle back to gain momentum. The Saints were picking up on the Cougars defense and were feeding the hot hand of Destiny Goodnight. Torilynne Nelson provided an ace to make it 9-10 GCC. The Saints would score off serve receive as Alexis White would provide a timely kill from the outside making it 10-11 GCC. The Cougars would come back with a kill and make it 12-10 GCC. Coach Pacholke called a time out trying to regain the team. The Saints would rally for a huge point off of Alexis White would tip to the open location. GCC would call a time out with the score being 12-11 GCC. The Cougars made an error giving the Saints 12-12 tie. Riley Sams would serve again as the Cougars attacked the ball off the block for point 13. The Cougars server would stand behind the line and miss the serve into the net. The whole gym erupts with excitement leaving the door open for the Saints tied 13-13. Torilynne Nelson attacked as the setter and caused confusion for GCC giving the Saints led 14-13. Hope Hasbrouck back to serve again as the Saints would win on a block from Erin Froehlich and Torilynne Nelson. Saints would clinch their first conference title by two points.
The Saints are currently 15-7 on the season and will continue play at Districts in Randolph, NJ at County College of Morris on November 9-10th. Thanks to all the Saints supporters who showed up to the tournament this weekend. It was a thrill to finally get a conference championship in front of the home crowd.
